The 199th Light Infantry Brigade arrived in
Vietnam Dec. 12, 1966. From its base camp, situated just north of Long
Binh Post, the Brigade's mission has developed into a role of
pacification.
The 1968 Tet Offensive began Jan. 31, with a 3 a.m. rocket attack against II Field Force, Vietnam, headquarters; Long Binh Post, and Bien Hoa Air Base. With several elements of the 275th VC Regiment simultaneously attacking the II Field Force-199th perimeter, the Redcatchers killed over 500 enemy in the first 14 hours of the attack, and after three days, had been credited with more than 900 enemy killed. During the Jan. 31 Long Binh attacks, the brigade's 3rd Battalion, 7th Infantry was helicoptered into Saigon to retake the Phu Tho Racetrack from enemy forces who had infiltrated the capital and were using the racetrack as a command post. The track was taken within eight hours and for the next two days, the battalion engaged in house-to-house fighting in the Cholon Sector. The brigade's most recent actions have been characterized by light and sporadic contact with enemy forces during numerous reconnaissance-in-force operations around the Xuan Loc-Long Binh area. |
