Apr. 1: Combat assault to rocket belt, into elephant grass covering river, had to jump 6 feet or more from chopper and wade 100 yards to dry land. Apr. 2: Charlie Company replaced us on LZ, large rocket and mortar attack day we left. Direct hits on ammo dump and 8 inch howitzer. 17 KIA, 15 WIA. Apr. 3: Log day. Jungle defoilated from Agent Orange. Rained very hard. Apr. 4: Combat assault called off. Rained last 3 days. Apr. 5: Buzzel left for the "World". Rain. Apr. 6: One chopper brought company into Phouc Vinh rear. Pilot gave us a wild ride. Apr. 7: Change of command & awards ceremony. Floor show band called ANTS. Apr. 9: Quick Reaction Force. Apr. 10: Night ambush in rubber plantation. Apr. 11: Halfway between Phuoc Vinh & Song Be on ARVN Special Forces LZ. Families live with them. Very filthy and dirty. Apr. 12: Quick Reaction Force. Saw floor show. Apr. 13: Move to special forces camp and protect it from ground attack. Apr. 14: Phuoc Vinh, going out to bridge, raining. Apr. 15: Payday. 4 changes of mission. About 15,000 meters from Phuoc Vinh near Song Be river and bridge. Rain. Apr. 16: Rudy sick. Went swimming in river. Apr. 17: Logged and paid. Went swimming in river. Apr. 18: Enemy movement. Apr. 19: Air mattresses were sent out about 2 weeks ago. Swam in river. Apr. 20: Log day. Skipper came out. Bathing in river everyday. Apr. 21: Medevac Six when he got sick. Humped 4 klicks. Apr. 22: Search for enemy mortar tube. Apr. 23: Log day, had to medevac someone. Apr. 24: Combat assault. Apr. 25: New company and battalion commanders. Jake put in for R&R for 28 June to 3 July. Rumors of going to Quan Loi. Apr. 27: Log day. Apr. 28: Jake in charge of squad. Lt. Walters sick. Apr. 29: Log day. Firefight. Apr. 30: Official chieu hoi day and ceasefire. All the gooks are supposed to surrender. Waited all day, none showed up. Firefight. |
