Mar. 1: Log day. Mar. 2: Company found 165 tons of rice. Mar. 3: Finding some weapons with cache. Mar. 4: Log day. Mar. 5: Firefight 2 WIA. Mar. 6: Firefight, Cat walked into ambush. Cat asked for Range Platoon for support. Steve was behind a log and Danny was behind a small anthill that a gook was shooting at. Gooks in bunkers and trench with .30 caliber machine guns, Frank Ware KIA, 16 WIA. Jerry Dietl helped wounded soul brother, Jimmy, hit in backside, arm and leg. Log day. Mar. 7: Charlie company found 90 tons of rice, 210 SKS assault rifles, case of 9MM pistols. Gooks attacked Charlie company, 1 KIA, 23 WIA, over 130 enemy KIA. Log day. Mar. 8: Jake got orders for E-5. Melvin received letter telling of hometown friend who was a helicopter pilot being killed in action. Mar. 9: 11th Armored Cavalry that we were with was ambushed by gooks, 2 tanks blown up, 6 KIA, 7 WIA. Mar. 10: Buzz back from R&R. Log day. Firefight. Mar. 11: Battalion commander OK after his chopper was shot down. Lt. Burke wounded on LZ Flashner. Estimated 362 enemy KIA in 2 weeks. Melvin Chambless now squad RTO. Mar. 12: Jake in rear, 60 rounds incoming. LZ Flashner had over 125 rounds of incoming and still getting hit. Firefight. Mar. 13: Log day. Mar. 14: Firefight, 12 WIA, Rudy hit, Tina hit in eye, sent in 4 WIA. Alpha company firefight 4 KIA, 42 WIA. Mar. 15: Been out in the field almost 30 days with out even seeing a firebase. On the 14th our platoon was hit 3 times. Cambodia ordered all VC and NVA out of the country. Mar. 16: Ambushed gooks in open field, none killed. Log day. Mar. 17: Firefight, 1 KIA, 4 WIA. Mar. 18: Firefight 1 KIA, 24 WIA, Jim O'Brien wounded in foot. 3 of the wounded not expected to live. Mar. 19: Log day. Rocky left for R&R. Rumor of getting 29 new cherries. Mar. 20: Got 23 cherries in rear area. 11 from Big Red One, 12 brand new. Mar. 21: 3 cherries refused to go out with the company. Took cherries to Special Forces camp Anne, then by log bird to LZ Illingworth. Lots of dust. Buzz logs company from here. Mar. 22: Firebase Illingworth, over 30 days in the bush. Mar. 23: Mine sweep down road. Garry Bruckner's hometown friend came out. Mar. 24: LZ Illingworth. Plane spotted tanks. Post office on strike. Mar. 25: LZ Illingworth. Mar. 26: LZ Illingworth. Mar. 27: Left with the 11th Armored Cavalry. Mar. 28: With 11th Armored Cavalry, swept 17 klicks. Mar. 30: With 11th Armored Cavalry. 2/8 attacked on LZ Illingworth by 600 gooks. Lots of rockets and mortars. General Casey shot down, not hurt. We are so close to the Cambodian border, the gooks can resupply faster than us. Mar. 31: Flew from special forces camp at LZ Katum in Tay Ninh to Phouc Vinh. Yesterday we were in Tay Ninh looking for 600 NVA that over run firebase Jay and killed 14 G.I.s. Fought 95th Charley Division in Tay Ninh. |
