Melvin Chambless to Tay Ninh by Chinook helicopter then to LZ Carolyn. Feb. 3: Jake in rear, 2 rounds came in at airport. Man the berm. Company with 11th Armored Cavalry. Melvin Chambless from LZ Carolyn into Tay Ninh. Stayed in guard house with Garry Bruckner, Duke Wascho, Danny Bridges, Eliot Burton. Feb. 4: Melvin Chambless, Garry Bruckner, Duke Wascho, Danny Bridges, Eliot Burton came out to the field from LZ Carolyn. Company with 11th Armored Cavalry, mortar attack. Feb. 5: With 11th Armored Cavalry. Contact with gooks. Feb. 6: With 11th Armored Cavalry. Rumor of 3 day stand down. Feb. 7: With 11th Armored Cavalry. Feb. 8: Tet ceasefire. Feb. 9: Combat assault LZ Carolyn, 10 helicopters. Bathe in bomb crater. Feb. 10: LZ Carolyn, rain. Feb. 11: LZ Carolyn, supposed to go in to Bien Hoa for stand down. Feb. 12: Bien Hoa 3 day stand down, VIP center, swam in real pool. Feb. 13: Bien Hoa 3 day stand down, VIP center. Feb. 14: Bien Hoa 3 day stand down, VIP center, floor show, football in pool. Feb. 15: Left Bien Hoa airport on plane for LZ Carolyn. Feb. 16: LZ Carolyn. 11th Armored Cavalry had big enemy contact, 2 tanks, 1 APC knocked out, 9 KIA, 2 LIA, 24 WIA, 38 step ons. Feb. 17: LZ Carolyn, Range platoon on 10 minute notice to react. Feb. 18: LZ Carolyn, secure a mine sweeping team and a convoy. Feb. 19: With 11th Armored Cavalry near Black Virgin Mountain. Feb. 20: With 11th Armored Cavalry, have mad minutes every night. Feb. 21: With 11th Armored Cavalry, left packs with tracks and humped. Feb. 22: Left 11th Armored Cavalry at LZ Barbara, combat assault to field. Feb. 23: Secure field for 105 battery, will become LZ Pat. Combat assault. Log day. Going into area No GI's have been in for 4 months. Feb. 24: Found trotter. Automatic ambush detonated. Firefight, 3 bodies. Gooks came, firefight, another automatic ambush detonated, 3 bodies and bicycle. Feb. 25: Put automatic ambush near bodies on trotter. Automatic ambush detonated. Found 2 and chased 2 gooks. One automatic ambush stolen. Movement later. Feb. 26: Log day. Firefight. Gooks blew stolen automatic ambush on us, 0 WIA. Feb. 27: Helicopter spotted trotter. Found bunker complex, set up there. Feb. 28: Patrol leaving perimeter to ambush trotter. Firefight, Flashner KIA, 4 WIA, Jake, Rudy, Lassiter, Rocky. |
